Body wave wigs, honestly assessed
Body wave is the most forgiving texture we stock, and it's the one we point most first-time buyers at. The loose S-bend hides the uniformity that gives a wig away, and it doesn't need re-defining after every wash the way a tight curl does.
What it's good at
- Hides the regularity that makes cheap wigs obvious
- Holds its shape through a wash without needing re-defining
- Carries highlights and ombré better than straight hair does
- Forgiving if your parting or blending isn't perfect yet
What's harder about it
- The wave catches on collars and coat seams at the nape
- Loses definition slightly with each wash — it drifts toward straight over months
- Harder to get properly dry at the roots than straight hair
- Looks bulkier than straight at the same density, which some people don't want
Why a wave hides a wig better than straight hair
The thing that gives a wig away, more often than the lace or the hairline, is uniformity. Real hair is inconsistent. Strands sit at slightly different lengths, catch the light unevenly, and refuse to lie in perfect parallel. A dead-straight wig is the opposite of all that — every strand doing the same thing, reflecting light in one clean sheet.
A body wave breaks that up without you having to do anything. The S-bend means light lands at a dozen angles instead of one, and the outline of the hair against your shoulders stops being a ruler-straight edge. It’s a low-effort way of buying irregularity.
This is also why body wave is more forgiving of a parting you haven’t perfected. Waves fall over the part line and soften it. Straight hair sits obediently on either side and draws a bright line down the middle of the thing you most want people not to study.
The nape problem nobody mentions in listings
Here’s the part that gets left out of product descriptions: on a body wave wig, almost all your tangling happens in one place — the few inches at the back of your neck, where hair rubs against a collar, a coat, a car seat, a headrest.
It isn’t the length that does it. A 22-inch wave worn with your hair up will tangle far less than a 16-inch one worn loose under a wool coat all winter. Friction is the variable, not inches.
Two things help, and neither is a product:
- Move the wave off the friction point. Half-up, a low bun, or hair pulled to one shoulder removes the rubbing entirely for the hours you’re wearing a coat.
- Detangle the nape first, not last. Most people start brushing at the ends and work up. On a wave, start at the nape while it’s still loose and you’ll break up the matting before it gets compressed.
If a wig is going to disappoint someone at month three, this is usually where it starts.
How it ages
A body wave doesn’t stay exactly as it arrived, and it’s better to know that going in.
Each wash relaxes it slightly. Over roughly six months of regular wear, the pattern typically opens up — still wavy, but looser and less defined than the day it came out of the box. Heat styling accelerates this; so does washing in water that’s hotter than you think it is.
Some people mind. A lot don’t, and end up preferring the softer version because it looks more lived-in — which is, after all, the point. If you’re someone who wants a texture to stay put exactly as bought, a straight wig will hold its character for longer, and that’s a legitimate reason to choose one.
Who should probably pick something else
Body wave is our default recommendation, but it isn’t universal.
If you want the wig noticed — if the point is that it looks like a look — body wave is too quiet. A deep wave or a defined curl has visual weight that this doesn’t.
If you’re wearing it under a hard hat, a helmet, a uniform collar, or anything else that presses on the nape for hours, the friction problem above gets much worse and a straight wig at a shorter length is a kinder choice.
And if you genuinely hate the extra visual bulk — body wave at 180% density looks fuller than straight hair at the same density, because the wave holds hair away from the head — that’s a real aesthetic preference, not a mistake. Go straight.

Questions people ask
Is body wave the same as loose wave?
They're neighbours, not the same thing. Body wave is a wider, flatter S — it reads almost as "hair with movement" rather than hair with a curl pattern. Loose wave has a tighter, more defined bend. If you want the wave to be noticeable, go loose; if you want it to just look like good hair, go body.
Will it stay wavy?
Mostly, but it softens. Each wash pulls a little definition out, and after six months of regular wear a body wave typically sits looser than it did new. You can bring it back with a light set, but plenty of people find they prefer it at that point.
Does body wave tangle more than straight?
A bit, and almost all of it happens at the nape where hair rubs against your collar. That's the friction point, not the length overall. Anyone who tells you a texture doesn't tangle is selling something.
Can I straighten a body wave wig?
On a human hair wig, yes, with heat protection and moderate temperature. What you can't reliably do is get the wave back exactly as it was. Treat straightening as a one-way door unless you're happy with whatever pattern returns.
